En Plein Air

The extra-fine point of my pen more like an instrument of telemetry, seismology at this altitude, this slant. Or a trekking pole, catching hold, offering tentative balance. But there are moments when the cloud shadows and crescents of sunlight roll over me, a rapid scan like a gigantic photocopy machine taking an image. Maybe we are being x-rayed, palpated by the force of the mountain . . . .There has been the constant question of what writing is here. With the model of the camera, its rushes and outtakes, what is a good day of writing on the mountain?

the day within the day—
ink blots of cloud shadows
over the vineyards
