Tsemo Gompa

On our only day off, we decide to make the trek to the Gompa—the highest point of the city of Leh—where there is an ancient Buddhist monastery. The trail is not marked and there's a demanding slope with rocks sharper than razors.

I imagine the monks living in this sacred and inaccessible place, who climb with total indifference. As if the mountain is not an obstacle. As if the material things are not the real problem. The real challenges are . . .

one of my climbing shoes breaks.

My thoughts go to the car accident three years before; my right knee has still not healed.

on the mountain top,
the sunset reaches out
for my shadow
