Crossing the Glacier

Overlooking a glacier from the surrounding summits. Early morning hush, cloudless sky, crisp air. Up here, a quiet serenity. Although midsummer, morning temperatures are still low.

Experience of a fourteen-year-old comes to my mind. I remember a group of twelve girls, three each tied to the rope of a mountain guide, crossing the glacier during a school mountain hiking program.

I see, although more than half a century has passed since, the mystical blue of the deep crevasses and sense the intense cold air down there, surely a hostile place to rest.

At times, a rumbling noise from inside the ice is heard. The girls are carefully watching their steps, placing each foot with great caution on the ice. It is an experience for life they will never forget.
