Geibi Gorge, Japan

We lounge on a mat in the flat-bottomed boat. A weatherworn man with a pole labours strongly to ferry us upstream. Autumn-clad cliffs flank the river with gold, amber, rust and ochre. I cherish the silence.

The return journey is downstream. Our ferryman removes his coolie hat, the soft breeze lifting his sparse hair. On the bank a heron holds its pose as we glide by. I lift my eyes to the swathe of blue above.
