No Sleepover

Before she is supposed to arrive, I catch lightening bugs and sing with the crickets. I devise a phone for sharing confidences with my friend by connecting an empty orange juice can to Mott's apple with a thin string.

I hold my breath when my mother tells me Elizabeth has "cold feet" and won't be my first sleepover guest. My mother has to explain the meaning of this scary and strange term because it's July in North Carolina and my own feet are sweating.

Now when I hear the expression, I see a scared winged beetle in my warm hands, the homemade telephone, my mother's face.
