Spring Story

She coos she sings she fawns while undoing my silver buckles
She lights sparklers of laughter with a match of hope
Her daydreams leap round the stable on grasshopper-legs

Cricket-sounds lap at the edge of the door
The light bulb glows with a brassy hum
while she brushes me down after an evening's ride

barnand when the bristles' bliss
               is finished
I snort my approval I stamp my thanks

then stretching her long lovely frame full out
on the tips of her toes

                    she cups an ear
and with a warm sweet rippling
                    of tickling breaths

she says his name

     the sweet-talk she gives
                         her gelding
