Lost Dreams

Nature consoles me. Quiets my mind. Lightens my load so to speak. So, in need, I venture out to the Botanic Garden and settle on my favorite weathered bench. At once, I am distracted by the travels of a single ant, as it zigzags across the pebbled path, carrying a crumb almost its own size. The clouds cover the sun. The day slows. For just that moment I become the ant.

On the TV news, there are reports of thousands of deaths from the passage of a typhoon over a small island in the Pacific. A seawall broke and the shore defenses, already weakened by shoddy construction, gave way. The responsible were arrested and jailed. In other news, a second politician was implicated . . .
