Dark holes pockmark the field of winter pale weeds. A red-tail hawk searches for a rustle in the dry cover. Near a fencepost, a vole darts among the holes. Another nibbles a stalk, another pokes its head above the earth.

The bird’s shadow passes; they freeze or dart underground. One aims to blend in as a clod of dirt. The dullest brown, eyes like pinheads, the vole nearly merges with the ground. But its plump body quivers, and its pulse gives its life away.
