Louise’s Grave

Louise was a worker in our building for years. She came to the office at the end of the day to vacuum the carpets and take out the garbage. She had a quick smile and a bad cough. She joked about the weather and my running. Whenever it was a nice day she said, “I hope you brought your running shoes.” For most of the year, we talked about her granddaughter, who needed a liver transplant.

Her grave is full of flowers. A light drizzle persists, muting spring colors. A stone next to hers marks a daughter who died in 1954, just after her birth. Louise never mentioned her.
