The stray sidles up to me with an air of trust I’ve done nothing to earn. Thinking she’s hungry I bend down from my chair and pour out half of my tea. Completely ignoring the tea and my attempts to draw her attention to it, she positions her head right beneath my foot. I stroke her with the bottom of my sandal. Every time I stop, she inches a little bit closer.

Across the street a young man examining his reflection in a shop window whips out a comb. His friend grins and says something, and the young man grins back.
