Summer’s End on Mt. Rainier

I walk up the steep paved trail, stop to lean on my cane, catch my breath. Sip some water. Look up at great Tahoma. Snow plasters the peak—swirls over crevice and cranny. Stands of cedar and fir netted in dawn dull the bear grass, the bronze of summer paintbrush, purple of alpine aster and pink of mountain daisy. Soon the wildflowers will die back. Snow will cover more of the mountain. I walk down and take care not to slide and fall. The path is precipitous. My bones brittle.

sun light slips
into the mountain’s shadow . . .
autumn chill
