Wet Season

Cinders creep under the sill, etching our faces with black as the old steam engine chugs up through the rainforest, snaking its way through hand-hewn tunnels. The Barron Falls carve a slender stream past the mat of palms and banana plants. The engine slows to a crawl, before edging across a towering bridge. We pull ring tabs off cans, and quench our thirst with beer and diet coke.

The bridge is narrow and curved, frail against the ravine over which we pass on our way to the jungle village of Kuranda. As the train curls into a horseshoe shape, a member of the group leans out to wave at tourists in the carriages to our rear.
