Cherie Hunter Day
Cupertino, California, U.S.A.

Blue-eyed Grass

A knee-high wooden sign points away from the beach to Mound Meadow. We take the detour eager for quiet and wildflowers. Monterey pines line both sides of the path. In a small clearing one pine has nubby green cones within reach. Next a dense stand of pines—their lower branches enrobed with lace lichen. Hikers are cautioned to stay on the trail; the lush growth of poison oak everywhere makes it mandatory.
