The Spinning Top

As a child cherishes a spiral shell or blue-eyed china doll for solace, I keep a wooden top and pump the handle until the circus comes to life: hoops and umbrellas twirl, a trapeze artist flies through the air. To hear the different tones, I vary the speed, glimpse the fortuneteller's turning card, and fill in visions of magicians pulling rabbits out of hats. Pumping the top faster and faster, the colours blur into a glare of white light until it loses momentum and wobbles in ever-widening circles eventually tipping back into the silence.

the Milky Way arms winding toward brightness
