Far from Shore

Coming into shore, I see a hawksbill turtle and follow it for a while. Mirroring the turtle's movements as it glides beneath the surface, trying to match the movement of my arms with its forelegs, I lose track of time. A snorkel full of water brings me up, and I can see that I'm far from shore. Even through my prescription mask lens, the mountain ridges running down to the beach are no more than smudges.
