under the wire

                    Tongue, spit
this talk aside
                                     â€”Pindar, Ninth Olympian Ode

. . . the notes I owe are coming due

for all the times she let me slip in under the wire, deferring my debts and tossing them into that stylish little handbag she swings like a streetwalker from an ivory shoulder—

now with a miser's pride, Fate pours them out like marbles on the table, no tiger eyes,

all oxbloods.

through all our best-laid plans
                                     the sanderlings

Quoted from Pindar's Odes translated by Roy Arthur Swanson, New York, 1974
