Desert Morning

Her eyes sparkled as she expressed childlike delight in the finches and cardinals, hawks and quail flying an hour after sunrise in our desert neighborhood. That was the last time I saw this beautiful nineteen-year-old girl; less than a year later she was living on the streets in Indiana—to be discovered by another street person, no doubt, even as I'd discovered her under a mesquite tree dripping with mistletoe—the Golden Bough of Greek mythology. Goddesses make their own importance.
