I fold my daughter’s hair into a braid, and we walk to the bottom of the hill to clean the river of what the last storm brought down. Sticks and leaves that dam the river. Odd bits of trash. I could ignore it, let it become what it will, but I have become the caretaker of this river, this land, these people. The storm was unreasonable, but beautiful just the same. You can be both.
