We were sharing peeks at the same used book cart, he and I, when I whipped my right arm around and stepped away.

He half-looked at me, and before he could escape, I confessed. I thought a wasp was on me.

We both looked down, and, there, in place of a wasp, was something green and leggy.

A praying mantis.

That was on you? He was intrigued now. It’s good luck, you know, when they land on you.

True or not, I accepted his explanation, and went back to browsing.
