Unnatural Selection

Muscovy ducks arrive by the flockload each spring in Southern Florida. "They’re foul, despicable creatures,” a friend complains, as she watches them take up residence on the boundary of her backyard.

“They make a horrid mess—the lawn, the sidewalks—and they harass the mottled ducks until they fly off for good.” She glares through her sliding glass door.

Near tears, she decides to intervene this time. After the offending birds lay their eggs among the rocks and cypress leaves, she patrols the neighborhood, a ball peen hammer swinging from her hand.
