Monkey Bars

The playground is where we begin that summer day. We older kids push young ones on their swings and merry-go-round. We take a trip over monkey bars, knees curled around the top bar, heads and arms dangling below—a pleasant dizziness.

Then forbidden places whisper our names. Dares are made to walk the train trestle. What about the river? We stare down into the flowing waters, mystic and mesmerizing, a hidden world. The hot, humid day pushes us closer. The golden image of the sun pulsating on the water pressures us until David, with his eager eyes and Milky Way freckles, jumps.
