Being Human

Everything flees from me. Sand coloured fish only known by their shadows spread fast away from my tread. Pelicans stand tall, eyeing me and readying their wings. The calls of the shorebirds in the dunes as I approach are cries of warning.

But this cicada with a half wing torn off. He climbs slowly to the top of this tide-caressed boulder and tries to fly away, falls and tries again, over and over. Although I am surrounded by the deafening singing of a hundred or more cicadas, right now this one is the first and only under my gaze. I stay still, wanting its struggle to mean something. He is not singing. He will climb and fall like this until he dies, whether I watch him or not.
