Lost Boys

I was part of the farmer's gang that built this seawall. The view of the mudflats is much the same; a narrow creek of samphire and seablite winds into the estuary. Clover is restricted to the slope of the embankment and the edge of the shallow dyke. A ginger bumblebee collects pollen from a patch of scarlet flowers near the sluice. The salt works has gone, a red hill is all that remains. A young boy is walking the gravel path, not far from me. Lost in his thoughts, he does not look up.
