Nuno Burns the Photos

Gaetano stands in the cellar. Chickens hang from pipes. Feathers soak in a thick tub. He feeds the furnace with photos from the old country. My aunt whispers "Pa" but does not raise her hand. Such is the geography of respect.

family reunion—

I retell their stories, scraps and crumbs of memory . . . the daily brodo and the horned bread for dunking, the grapevine by the chicken coop, the wine in cool green bottles, the wooden polenta stick . . . the burning details. Nuno, so much is lost in fire, in the snap of heat.
