In response to the voicemail you left me just now . . .

. . . yes, I let the call ring and ring when I saw your picture pop up on the phone screen. I’ve told you in messages via text, Facebook, and e-mail that I do not wish to speak with you. But my words to you are down from a robin’s breast caught on spring breeze. You wait a little while, try again. And again. Here is what I’ll say now: some soft evening just as the setting sun throws purple haze on the horizon, go out and listen to the chirps of crickets, the skitters of skunks, and somewhere in the din will be the simple song of the cardinal to its mate. Please do not show up at my house—I won’t be here anyway.
