Piano Keys—The Linden

Oh, it was so good to be ill. The family’s attention on me, someone’s head appearing around the door from time to time. For once, they had to respect my space; the bedroom was mine. My sister would bring my favourite book from the library, always the same, about a gnome with pointed nose, unruly hair and beady eyes, who lived in a tree.

Between picture book and fevered dreams I listened to piano notes tinkling from afar; sipping Linden flower tea sweetened with its honey. The scent filled my lungs with the promise of hot summers, when I would swim and play again. My mother’s recipe—to lure me back from myth and fairies into her fragrant embrace.
