The carpenter’s here in inhuman heat, repairing the birdhouse, expanding the storage shed, putting awnings over the doors to our offices in the old cabin downslope from dogwood, oak and pine. His moustache is like a plank. His eyes were painted for him. His feet hurt, as if someone had nailed him to time. He talks to my wife about unfixable friends who have rotted, are dust. I like him a lot. Everything he does, he does well, and he never overcharges. He’s been eating lots of ice cream to keep cool, he says, patting his big belly. You don’t look overweight, my kind wife replies, her smile tiling the constructions of love.
