Visible for Miles

Spooky-strange this landmark scared me as a child. It located a place where weird folk dwelt. And now on a nightmare day it is a matter of yards beyond the window, my sole view. I draw the curtains tight. Then slowly, very slowly, day by day, this brown and red brick water tower, six storeys high, from its chimney stack, its welsh slate roof, down through the corbelled balconies, the arches, proves a kind of friend. I warm to its russet surfaces which bring to mind old masterpieces of the Flemish school. Over six long weeks the image becomes part of me.

echoing past the old dark tower
wild geese in flight
