He tells me he’ll show me waterlilies, jewelled butterflies, multihued floral displays. In our rattly hire-car we motor down narrow lanes, get lost, retrace our tracks and find our way again. I hand him the map but he is unable to read French, and there are no passers-by for me to ask directions. We chug down more lanes. Aha, he points at a small plaque on a weathered wall. ‘Leonardo da Vinci! You can view designs of flying machines.’ His face shines with enthusiasm. ‘Moving walkways … or was that Victor Hugo … no, he was into sewers and stolen candlesticks and revenge … oh, and forgiveness too.’ His lips twitch with amusement, and suddenly flying machines are the most interesting things in the world.
