Oak Grove

I've taken my grandsons, five and seven years old, to visit great-grandpa at his senior residence. He and I sit on lawn chairs watching them play about the yard, an area of grass and trees with thick gnarled trunks. Acorns cover the ground like round berries on a tart.

“You can’t catch me, Nana!” True, I cannot catch either of them unless they wish me to. Acorns covering the surface of the slope sound with a crunch underfoot. A squirrel on a gray branch watches, motionless. A breeze ruffles the bush of its tail.

A slight chill rides on the breeze. I give my father a hand as he pulls himself up from the deep wooden chair.

shadows lengthen –
his bony shoulder
under my hug
