It’s a picnic-perfect sunny Sunday in the Deep South and we haul a basket of hoagies and potato salad to the elaborately manicured botanical garden. Everything is in bloom. We ooh and aah at the tulip rows and the perfume of lilacs, then park ourselves on a wooden bench by a pond to enjoy our snack. A few bites into our drumsticks, a bevy of swans blazes up the embankment from the pond, trumpeting away and air-jabbing their beaks at us like bayonets.
