Far from Everywhere

Catching the long-delayed last plane to the northernmost island of Hokkaido. Every flight north was canceled because of a snowstorm there. Racing to the last train east to Kushiro where we were set to view the mating red-headed cranes the next day.

Hokkaido train
the evening power line posts
fill with snow

There are only two stops along the way and otherwise occasional farms, forests, empty lowland.

snowy evening
even the twisted branches
with snow

far from everywhere
the evening trees leave indents
of fallen snow

Other than at the two stops there are no man-made lights outside the window and I fade into what is out there.

empty evening field
the vastness intensified
with deep snow
