Spring Marriage

My husband and I visit the hill country farm of his childhood where his mother still enjoys a rural lifestyle complete with a milk cow and chickens. We walk across a fallow field and down an incline. I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Texas with rice fields and murky canals. Water bubbling out of stone formations look exotic. He reaches into the clear water and pulls out an aquatic plant. Without hesitation, he puts the leafy greens in his mouth, and hands me some. How unsanitary. We could catch a disease. No, he explains, the limestone filters all impurities. I trust him and crunch a crispy stem.
