The Mimosa Tree in the Backyard of My Youth

I never told my parents that it shook me up: the news of blight they broke on the car ride home from the train station at the end of my first semester. After supper I went to the back door to call our old dog in for the night. I stared for minutes into the fading light—just a bare stump, no feathery green, no puffy pink, no childhood colors. They told me they had no choice, Fusarium Wilt is incurable.
