The Window Table

Coffee shops possess an etiquette that forces itself upon its patrons, tips them toward behaviors which ego and desire would admonish. Most don’t even require words: someone leaves the local section of a newspaper behind, or without ever looking up from stirring their cup a person passes the cream to a customer who enters from their periphery. Another grabs the door for the woman wearing a newborn, and then someone stands from their table and gestures to the person waiting next in line, as if to say, here, take this one.

from the corner
of my eye, a flicker
in the window . . .
my head says sparrow
my heart tanager
