Shared Spaces

The Wal-Mart mechanic motions to me from the lobby door. I follow him into the garage, to my car. “Look a here.”

He points under the raised hood.

Over a dozen acorns inside the lidless air filter manifold, side by side in a ring, around the metal outer covering.

“How ya figure those got there.”

I shake my head. But I have a hunch: field mice near home crawling up from the ground into hoses, through small dark, airless openings, into the tightly shut manifold under my closed hood. Back out again.

I have raccoons, possums, armadillos, field rats, deer, scorpions, daddy-longlegs, spiders. I almost stepped on a rattlesnake one night in the dark. Anything can happen.
