The Life of the Senses

It’s the only good option. The vet’s gravelly voice one of wisdom or more likely age. There’s just no reducing the pressure inside that right eye. He says I need to smile more because of her. She picks up on my cues. He’s right. The man I just met half an hour ago. He’s the expert. Acute onset glaucoma. We talk prosthetics. A short talk. He tells me the order of priorities in a dog’s life of the senses. First the nose. Then the ears. Eyes are third. And one eye gone is a handicap most adjust to within days. They are not like us, he says. They want to be happy.
