A Winter Primer

Winter is a time of nesting. Wake up early just to be aware of the fact that you’re going to lay your head back down and sleep in. When you wake again, listen to the sounds of the outside world: workers scraping the sidewalks. Trucks plowing the snow. The hums of car engines. Take time to think about how cold and grey it is outside and that you aren’t in the middle of it. Be selfish. Smile. Then tune out the world. Take your headphones from the nightstand and listen to the music that makes you feel good. Tell yourself, I’m not sure if I’ll get out of bed today, even though you know it isn’t true. Eventually, do get out of bed and put on a pot of coffee. Feel the grounds in your hands. Smell them. Hear them crunch as you grind them. Imagine the taste. Allow your senses to be evoked. Envision it as communion. Something that came from the earth and into your body, and now you are somehow changed forever. Or at least until your second cup. But never look that far ahead.
