I know so well his secrets, scrawled in code over twenty years on the dressing room door: the mortality rate of disappearing doves, bungs he uses to disarm the guillotine, soft blue flames that sit beneath the fire, combinations set to free the chains, seven extra aces in the pack, hidden pockets stitched into his back.

I am also aware of the mirror where he daily changes face, saying that mine no longer fits, and that it is to be replaced by a younger, prettier aide to take my place. He knows less well my secrets.
