Mainz, Thanksgiving Week, 2014

Bone-weary from the overnight flight, my husband and I trail behind our son who took the first train to meet us at the Frankfurt airport. Into the Sunday morning silence, he drags our suitcases across the dawn-damp cobblestones.

Old meets new across the millennia in this place once conquered by the Romans, occupied by Napoleon’s troops and bombed by the Allies. I find a beauty and grit in the restorations, a tolerance for glass facades attached to centuries-old stone walls.

We’ve visited Tim, studying abroad, many times, but this is different. A job has made this port city in Germany his new home.
