Bhoot (the ghost)

Every night it would be on the yet-to-be-tiled staircase—at the far corner of the landing—with hair flying all over, that out-of-this-world howl would lurch towards us. My eldest sister and I would go down screaming the few steps we had climbed . . . and as usual my mother would shout at Giri, telling her to behave. Giri was our sister—the bold one! I was just six years old but I can still remember the cold, rough floor . . .

an owl's screech
the seamless night
ripped in two
