Ars Longa

In a quiet, dimly lit room at the Asian Art Museum, I bend and squint at the placard giving details about the item behind the glass: date and place, dimensions, type of material. Sometimes the object lures me first; sometimes I need the description to glean what I’m looking at. Often, the placard is beside the point, as it should be. I’m here not for facts but awe. Appreciation and Education have their roles, but are wan cousins to Beauty and her sister Truth.
