Sum Daze

Once, she knew your age to the week. You were so novel that your life could not be generalized as “She’s a couple months old” or “She’ll be one in a few months.” No, it was, “She’s 22 weeks old” or “She was eight months old last Tuesday,” said with pride, as if you had accomplished something beyond sleeping and gurgling and dirtying diapers.

Now, you have to remind your mother that it’s your birthday. “Was that today?” You reassure her, yes. “What year were you born?” may be the next question.

Never mind. It was long ago and doesn’t really matter. Just hope that she doesn’t ask, “Who are you?”
