Kathy's Mum

I look out my window and it's as if nothing has changed. The sun is just lighting the snow. Coyotes and deer have tracked it. Chickadees, nuthatches and jays take turns at the feeder.

But something has changed. Last night, in winter's darkness, my friend held her mother's hand, watched the shallow, almost imperceptible breathing, as everything about that vibrant woman grew still.

And so my friend's world, inexorably new, unfolds in the morning light.
