A recent funeral at the Woden cemetery. The whole community turns out for a disturbed young man who’s taken his own life. I sneak a look at the soil in his grave. Need to know the geology of this place, where I might lie one day. Feel it and smell it. A heavy clay, yellowish brown, down to two meters. Residual bedrock. A dank smell. Then comes the mourners’ prayer. And the visceral thud of clay and stones falling on wood.
