Rivers of Heaven

Amaranth oozes into orange and yellow. And at last, the shifting veil of half-light fades to a clear zaffre morning. Sun warms my torch-ship, standing tall and needle-thin against the horizon.

Through the com-stat crackles: mark 10 to lift off.

sifting memories
shuffling feelings
long forgotten
I close the door
on the familiar

The thrust to escape earth's gravity is over quickly. I hit the booster switch and sling-shot my ship away past the moon and beyond . . .

through
my quartz-glass window
the earth
a patchwork ball
floating in a black sea

adrift
in this silent vacuum
no shadows
except my own fears
and incomplete dreams

far from home
with my feet firm
on a new planet
I listen to whispers
. . . alien voices

night falls
with beating wings—
cracks in the sky
reveal star-streams
in this uncharted heaven

Author's Note: Rivers of Heaven is another name for the Milky Way.
