Summer was always hot and sticky, but for a few Julys and Augusts I barely noticed. There was a boy at the pool with long legs and a big laugh, with honey-gold skin and beautiful hands that waved at me when I looked his way. His smile melted me more thoroughly than the sweltering heat radiating from the asphalt. I was like ice cream—swollen with his sweetness, dripping into rainbow-colored puddles. Sometimes, we lounged in green and white chairs after diving practice, and sometimes we drank iced cherry Cokes. He was heavy-handed with the grenadine. It coated my teeth and lingered in my mouth, and I wondered every day what he would taste like.

summer floats away
