Spirit of Place

Cylinder, sphere and cube.

Sitting on a wall by the water, I turn over in my mind what Cezanne said:that everything in nature can be reduced to those three shapes.

Assembled before me, willow fronds, ripples, reflected golden leaves . . . an inverted many-turreted castle.

The painter also said " . . . now a moment of your life is fleeting past. Catch it . . ."

I stare at the trees, still mostly in their summer shades, the sky brightening behind them. The river bank sweeps round in a curve.

as surely
as a pair of compasses
breathtaking arcs
between green and blue
two kingfishers
