On Thirst

a strong wind blows
at Jabal Umm 'Inab Pass
land of Bedouin
welcomes a stranger
with rock and sand horizons

Then peace in Sudan's empty wastelands, a lone tree offering shade to a worn traveler. And every fly in the desert. Before strange whispers along the road to Jebel Ferka. Yellow sands shroud my body. My mind. Make me one with this place.

minarets pierce
the Sahara's brushed sunset
taking refuge
in the soft darkness
beside the village well
