Bridal Veil Falls

Married in June. Warm September Yosemite honeymoon. Hiking along the Tuolumne River. Rascal raccoons invading camp. Twelve identical pictures of a sleeping fawn. Red wine with the sunset and coffee at dawn.

Three years later, we've returned. We stand at the edge of the snow-carpeted meadow, watching the spreading gold light behind Half Dome lead the November full moon into the valley. His arms encircle me like a warm shawl and I feel his breath in my hair. This is a pilgrimage of goodbye. Goodbye to the baby born prematurely in October and lost after only a day. Goodbye to us, because we know that his illness means the end of our time together.
